Letter from the Internal Medicine Residency Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine training programs at University of Maryland Prince Georges Hospital Center

We offer two training programs in the Department of Medicine:

  • 3-year categorical program in Internal Medicine – 12 positions available
  • 1-year preliminary program in Internal Medicine – 6 positions available

The goal of our residency program is to train physicians to become board-certified and capable of handling all aspects of the practice of internal medicine with finesse and aplomb.  To that end, we have set expectations and a curriculum for training in general internal medicine and the subspecialties according to the ACGME guidelines.

A dedicated core faculty fosters an atmosphere of academic curiosity, encouraging residents to use evidence-based medicine in their daily practice of medicine, as well as, in their case vignettes presented at local ACP and national meetings.  This, along with outstanding patient diversity and pathology, allows our residents to develop the skills to become excellent general internists or subspecialists.

Categorical residents will receive training in ambulatory, as well as, in-patient medicine with excellent continuity of care afforded by following their patients over the 3-year period from the ambulatory setting to the in-patient setting and vice versa. All categorical residents have their ambulatory experience at the out-patient setting located on the 2nd floor of the Gladys Spellman building, Cheverly. It is their role to assume responsibility as the primary care provider for their patients under the supervision of dedicated core faculty.

A work/life balance is achieved via a night float system.  This allows residents to finish accepting new admissions by 8:00 pm. Our program is also known for its atmosphere of collegiality among the residents, faculty and staff.

I invite you to tour the rest of our web site and submit an ERAS application to the University of Maryland Prince Georges Hospital Center. You can learn more about us by touring this site.  I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

Teshome Tegene
